Even the best designed web site would be wasted if nobody visited it.
Real success would be to attract new visitors. Most will find your site using Google or other search engines. These crawl the web analysing sites and adding words and phrases to their main index. When you search using Google, it scans its index to find your search phrases and then lists pages in order of 'PageRank'.
It's important to get your site high on the list - preferably at #1 so a high PageRank is important. Many web design firms claim to know with certainty how to increase your PageRank. I am sceptical: Google, with 50%+ of the market, does not publish its ranking criteria and often changes them.
Search phrases are better than words. A search for the phrase "running shoes" would yield more relevant results than a search for the separate words running shoes.
Based on extensive research, I follow a few simple rules:
Feature the owner's name often because many people will search on it.
With my client, speculate on what key phrases potential visitors might search.
Use key search phrases in page titles and site descriptions.
Use key search phrases near the top of the page file - in heading styles.
Submit your site to the top 10 search engines which yield 98% of searches.
I also urge you to ask other people to link from their site to yours. This not only raises your PageRank, but could get your site indexed earlier than otherwise.
Please be patient: you may have to wait several months before your site is indexed.
